So, some things to know about me.
I’m a fan of Ben Goldacre. For those of you who don’t know, he’s a newspaper columnist who writes about the misrepresentation of science in the media. He would say that the real story of what is going on in the world, as described by science, is far cooler and more interesting than any woo-woo crap you can make up. I agree with him. And that suggests – doesn’t it? – that I have a pretty hard-line, science-only view of the world. Quite a lot of the time, I do.
But there’s another bit of me, too. The bit of me that thinks there’s something in this “spirituality” thing – as long as you can differentiate it from the pretty nonsense. (It’s hard, to do that, I point out.) The part that reckons there’s more in Heaven and Earth than is dreamed of in your philosophy, Horatio. The part that’s pretty sure that while science is awesome, there’s also a hell of a lot it simply hasn’t figured out yet.
So there’s a division here. A division of me. I’m part astronomer, part astrologer. And I think it’s worth mentioning that, because pretty soon you’ll be able to hire me for the astrology bit. And given what I’ve just said about science, that probably sounds pretty weird.
Right? Right.
A few years back, I met this awesome guy called Don Lecouteur and his slightly-different conception of astrology. It’s called Client-Centered Astrology, and as the name suggests, it’s all about focusing on the owner of the chart, and not on the posturing of the astrologer. When done right, it’s surprisingly bullshit-free, and low on the “pretty nonsense” that I’m trying to cut through, as a human being as well as an astrologer.
It’s not about predicting the future, folks. It’s not about telling you what colour socks you’re going to wear next Thursday or what you had for breakfast this morning. Or even whether you’ll get that job or buy that house.
It’s about self-discovery.
It’s about talking to your patterns.
It’s short of jargon and it doesn’t invent connections that aren’t there.
I’ve been fascinated by astrology my whole life, and when I started studying with Don, I found a discipline of astrology that sits pretty easily with my need for scientific accuracy as well as spiritual connection. I’m not done searching, of course. But I graduated Don’s course, and as I work my way through this sometimes-paralyzing depression thing, I’m getting ready to start reaching out.
I should point out that I’m in California right now. And that has a lot to do with this post – not the state itself, but the fact that I came here to do a class with (guess who?) Havi and the class was totally inspiring. And there will probably be more blog posts on that experience, pretty soon.
For now, though: in a few days, I’m going to be launching this thing as an actual business venture. A makeshift, let’s-see-what-happens kind of business venture, but a business venture all the same. Don’t worry, gentle readers – I’ll keep you posted.
How could I not?

Wow, Lucy, that’s all kinds of awesome! Yay!
It’s really nice to read that you’re getting ready to start reaching out, despite the sometimes-paralyzing depression thing (sorry I’m just kind of rewriting what you wrote, but it was so perfect I couldn’t find better words!). It’s also very cool that you left Havi’s class feeling inspired (well, how could one do a class with Havi and not be inspired? but still!). I’m looking forward to reading more about it!
Your description of astrology is so exciting, because sometimes I read astrological forecasts and wind up feeling like they’re just not helpful.
But the way you talk about it sounds like it’s right up my alley.
I’m so happy that you are going to share more of your you-ness with us!
I’m so glad I found you! (Via Havi). I feel very much the same way that you do only my deal is a split between software engineering and the I-Ching. I can’t wait until you provide more info about the business thingie so I can (a) be your client and (b) do the same kind of thingie for myself because I have been dying to and have been a big chicken so far.
Lucy – This is a great way to explain why your approach to astrology is so different! You are so brave to admit to the depression and still be reaching out to do your new business thing. Every time I start to blog, I get bogged down in the “everything sucks right now” and put it off for another, better day … which may or may not come. Kudos for reaching around your resistance to make this terrific announcement! -casey
Hi! I also found you through @Havi’s blog.
I can’t wait to hear more about your understanding of astrology. I am very intrigued by what you have found that is “bullshit-free, and low on the “pretty nonsense”.
Good luck moving forward with your plans!
I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one to love Ben Goldacre and be totally woo woo too.
Like, I’m totally suspicious of Reiki, but spent three years of my life training to consecrate buildings.
Like I totally get that homeopathy *could* work, but if it does, it should stand up to systematic testing.
Like I totally get how the planets are good as a symbolic language, *and* that my chart was pretty insightful when I had people set it up on the floor and be the planets (*that* was a cool retreat) but… there’s a part of me going ‘But it’s not how the planets *actually* were at my time of birth, but how they *looked* (kind of) so *how* could that affect me…’
So, in short (hyuh, like you ever get ‘in short’ with me) er… I’m interested.
Good good.
As you were.
This is so great Lucy. I really had no clue about your approach to astrology and I’m very interested, intrigued and excited to know more.
Greetings!
Congrats from a Semi-Random Stranger, who came here by way of “The Fluent Self”.
Yay, you for finding a methodology that works for you, for being brave enough to bring it to the larger World.
I’d love to know more about this version of astrology as it sounds quite fascinating, and I *happydance* in general at finding more folk who are finding ways to blend the spiritual & the scientific, both in your post & here in the comments. It’s so nice not to be alone!
*waves at everyone*
My husband & I starting our own business (channelling, w/an emphasis on exploration), so I totally get what you are saying about it feeling a bit strange to be going into such a field while having a firm background & foothold in the sciences.
@Annie – Why wait?
(Btw, I am fascinated by the thought of some kind of cross-over between software engineering & the I-Ching. Tell me more!)
Bright Blessings & Good Fortune, All! (b/c you make your own luck
)

Another wanderer-in-ner via the Fluent Self. As a fellow woo-woo-but-skeptic person (pagan? check! believer in all sorts of crazy things? check! still skeptical? check!), I like where you’re going with this. Will definitely be watching for you to get it up and running
I guess I just followed the crowd in from Havi’s place — saw the “astrology” and thought I’d check it out. I studied astrology for a long time — a little like you, I make it more about self-discovery and having my own address in the universe than about predicting anything. I recently started making my own planets and stars and am having a wonderful time of it. Will add you to my bookmark list.
